Not every magical Christmas outing needs a ticket! If you're happy to explore on foot, London's festive streets make a brilliant free evening adventure for families. Here's a route we'd recommend for soaking up the Christmas atmosphere and seeing some of the capital's most famous decorations.
Start at Bond Street – Admire the festive displays and glamorous shop windows.
Head to Oxford Street – Take in the famous Christmas lights as you wander along one of London's best-known shopping streets.
Explore Carnaby Street – This is the place to look out for bold, colourful and creative festive installations.
Continue to Regent Street – Marvel at the iconic illuminated Christmas displays overhead.
Finish around Piccadilly Circus – Soak up the buzz of the West End before heading home.
You can extend the walk towards Covent Garden for its festive decorations and Christmas tree, or finish with a warming hot chocolate if the kids are still going strong!
Our tip: Check the official announcements for the 2026 displays before setting off, as decorations and switch-on dates can change from year to year. The best time to see the lights is after dark, but an earlier evening visit can help families avoid the very latest finish.
